The Challenge
In 2022, Coinedone embarked on a mission to create Superr, an app designed to empower parents with efficient parental control tools, ensuring their kids' safety in the digital realm.
When I joined the team in January 2023, we had a powerful tool in place, but the rudimentary UI and complex user flows made the user experience subpar. Moreover, Superr was transitioning into a complete parenting assistant, recognizing the need for more than just control in the digital age.
As the sole designer, I managed the redesign of Superr. by working closely with the CEO and the Product team, which included a Product Owner, two product managers, and front-end developers. I also collaborated with the QA team to get insights and feedback on design changes.
The redesign project was carried out in stages due to tight timelines, and I worked on the project between February 2023 and September 2023.
Problem Space
The existing Superr app faced multiple challenges:
Basic UI and Visual Design
The app was bland, failing to stand out from the competitors and the visuals weren't polished or refined, leading to a less-than-professional impression.
Inconsistent use of fonts, buttons, and colors created a sense of disorganization and this lack of visual coherency made the app difficult to navigate and understand.
The way information was organized and presented was ineffective and confusing making it difficulty find what they needed and completing tasks efficiently.
Complex Flows and Lack of Guidance
The app's functionality was overly complicated and difficult to follow and the features lacked sufficient guidance, hindering effective utilization.
Aligning with the Evolving Vision
There was a clear need for a complete overhaul to bring the app up to par with the company's ambitious vision. This revamp was not only to realign with this visionary shift and the UI/UX issues but also to seamlessly integrate forthcoming features designed to enhance the parenting experience.
Approach
To address these challenges, our approach included:
Redefining the user persona.
We refined the user persona by focusing on the unique requirements and preferences of working parents. This change gave us the opportunity to modify the app to better meet the particular needs of this target group and provide a more efficient and customised user experience.
Competitor Analysis
Competitor analysis involved identifying strengths, weaknesses, and innovative features implemented by competitors. We aimed to understand the common features, listen to what users liked or disliked about them, and pinpoint areas for improvement. This analysis was about learning from the field to enhance Superr., making it a standout choice for users.
Utilizing Apple's Human Interface Guidelines
A crucial aspect of our strategy involved aligning the redesign with Apple's Human Interface Guidelines. By closely adhering to these specifications and design principles, we ensured our redesign stayed on track with tight timelines.
Simplifying flows by adding proper guidance and tips
Recognizing the need for user-friendly processes, we implemented clear guidance and tips throughout task creation and onboarding flows. This simplification aimed to enhance the overall user journey, making it more intuitive and reducing any complexities associated with these essential app functions.
Enhancing UI and visual elements
Custom illustrations were created for the new look of Superr. New banner cards designs were also updated to match the new look.
With Jitter, we were able to integrate animated elements and add vibrancy to the app's design. As a result, interactions were more interesting and pleasurable in addition to adding a visually beautiful layer.
Results
Internal usability testing generated positive feedback, indicating a marked improvement in app experience and a reduction in complexity. However, the app's true success is yet to be measured post-launch when real user feedback becomes available.
After September 2023, the team continued to refine the app's functional elements and enhance its visual design while it was being developed. Although I was not part of this process, it was great to see most of my work brought to life.
